Install Fireball Wrangler Host on Ubuntu

For Ubuntu 24.04 or later on an Intel or AMD PC or VM. The apt repository is the easy way: add it once, and Wrangler updates arrive with Ubuntu's own updates.

You need

  • Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or later, with a desktop (GNOME or KDE).
  • An Intel or AMD (x86_64) computer. Not sure? Open Terminal and run the check below.
  • About 400 MB free, plus room for your agents' projects.

First: check your computer

Run this in Terminal. It should print x86_64.

  1. Which kind of computer is this?

x86_64 means this page is the right one. aarch64 means you need the ARM version.

    uname -m
    Terminal
    you@ubuntu:~$ uname -m

Install with apt (recommended)

Add Fireball's signed repository once. Ubuntu then installs Wrangler and keeps it up to date with Software Updater, just like Firefox or any Ubuntu app.

  1. Add Fireball's signing key

This lets Ubuntu check every Wrangler update really comes from Fireball Enterprise.

    sudo wget -qO /usr/share/keyrings/fireball-wrangler-archive-keyring.gpg https://fireballwrangler.com/downloads/apt/fireball-wrangler.gpg
  2. Add the repository

One line that tells apt where Wrangler lives.

    printf 'Types: deb\nURIs: https://fireballwrangler.com/downloads/apt\nSuites: stable\nComponents: main\nSigned-By: /usr/share/keyrings/fireball-wrangler-archive-keyring.gpg\n' | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/fireball-wrangler.sources
  3. Install Wrangler

Ubuntu asks for your password. After this, Software Updater brings each new version.

sudo apt update && sudo apt install fireball-wrangler-host
    Terminal
you@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt update && sudo apt install fireball-wrangler-host
    Get:5 https://fireballwrangler.com/downloads/apt stable InRelease
The following NEW packages will be installed:

Or: install the .deb with App Center

No Terminal needed, but you update by downloading again.

  1. Download the .deb

Use the Download .deb button at the top of this page. It saves fireball-wrangler-host_x64.deb to Downloads.

  2. Open it with App Center

In Files, right-click the .deb and choose Open With ▸ App Center. Click Install, then type your password.

  3. Or install it from Terminal

Same result, from the Downloads folder.

    cd ~/Downloads && sudo apt install ./fireball-wrangler-host_x64.deb

Or: run the AppImage

For other Linux versions, or to try Wrangler without installing it. It updates itself.

  1. Download and run

Download FireballWranglerHost-linux-x64.AppImage, make it runnable, and open it.

    cd ~/Downloads && wget -q https://fireballwrangler.com/downloads/linux/FireballWranglerHost-linux-x64.AppImage && chmod +x FireballWranglerHost-linux-x64.AppImage && ./FireballWranglerHost-linux-x64.AppImage

The first time it opens

Fireball Wrangler Host opens to Get ready: sign in with your Fireball account, then add an AI account (Claude Code, Codex, Gemini and more). Wrangler downloads and sets up each AI's command-line tool for you and opens its sign-in in your browser. When every row is checked, Start lights up.

Tools to install yourself

Wrangler sets up the AI tools for you. These few need your computer's own installer, so paste them into Terminal. Get ready shows the same commands if one is missing.

  • Git

Required. Your agents use it to work on code.

    sudo apt install git openssl
  • GitHub CLI

Optional. Needed for GitHub Projects sync and for agents to open issues and pull requests.

    sudo apt install gh

    Then sign in to GitHub:

    gh auth login
  • Keyring tools

Usually already there. Wrangler keeps its sign-in in Ubuntu's keyring.

    sudo apt install libsecret-tools

If something's off

App Center says “Something went wrong”.
Usually the wrong kind of .deb for this computer. Run uname -m: x86_64 needs fireball-wrangler-host_x64.deb. Then install that one.
A sign-in link opened in Text Editor instead of the browser.
Fixed in Wrangler 0.1.23. Update, or open the account's card in Accounts, choose Copy Link, and paste it into Firefox.
How do I update?
With the apt repository: Software Updater (or sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade). Installing any .deb from 0.1.24 on adds that repository for you, so this is usually all you need.
App Center says “Installed” for a newer .deb.
That's an Ubuntu App Center bug: it won't upgrade a package from a downloaded file. Install it from Terminal instead: sudo apt install ./fireball-wrangler-host_x64.deb (from the folder it's in). After that, updates come through Software Updater.
How do I remove it?
sudo apt remove fireball-wrangler-host. Your agents' folders stay in your home folder until you delete them.
